Snake Park community in disbelief after deadly shack fire
Three young siblings died on Wednesday when their shack caught fire. It’s not clear what caused the blaze.
JOHANNESBURG – Snake Park community members in Soweto, where a shack fire claimed the lives of three young siblings, say they are at a loss for words and still cannot believe that they will never see them again.
Emergency Service officials were called to the scene early on Wednesday morning.
It’s not clear what caused the blaze.
The children's parents both sustained burns and were treated at a nearby clinic.
Neighbours have described five-year-old Kamogelo Mokoena, his three-year-old sister Boitumelo and their 11 month-old younger sister Kutlwano as a joy to have around.
An emotional Virginia Kapo, who lives in the main house, says she is heartbroken because Kamogelo had just started his school career.
“Kamogelo was five, he just started Grade 1 and Kutlwano just started crawling now.”
Her brother Ezekiel has described scenes of chaos as he woke up to the screams of the children's mother calling for help.
“Everybody was here trying to maintain the fire but unfortunately the fire was too much.”
Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza has conveyed condolences to the family and has dispatched a team of psychologists to the home.
