Diepsloot daycare closed following child abuse claims
This week video footage emerged showing the elderly woman shaking an eight-month-old crying baby.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have now closed a daycare in Diepsloot where a 68-year-old woman has been accused of child abuse.
This week video footage emerged showing the elderly woman shaking an eight-month-old crying baby while also encouraging another child to beat him.
But on Wednesday, the State withdrew all charges against the woman in the Randburg Magistrates Court citing a lack of evidence.
WARNING: This video contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing.
A woman who has been running her own crèche for 16 years, also in Diepsloot, says she witnessed the 68-year-old caretaker abusing another child two years ago.
“The child got out past the gate and was nearly run over by a car. She took the child and threw the child on the ground. She stepped on the child.”
On Wednesday, a number of nursery school principals gathered at the Randburg Magistrates Court.
Police say they first need to obtain a statement from the child's mother, who has apparently fled to Zimbabwe, before new charges can be reinstated.
