CAPE TOWN – The registration processes at some tertiary institutions have been running without any hiccups thus far.

Students have started to register at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) as well as Stellenbosch University.

These universities were among the institutions which saw protests erupt on its campuses last year.

Some students have been demanding free tertiary education.

But CPUT's Lauren Kansley says that they have not had any threats of renewed protests.

“The registration process is running along smoothly at the moment. There are a number of processes happening simultaneously, so we are processing the very last of the applications that we received at the end of 2016 and those people should be receiving their replies online soon.”

Meanwhile Stellenbosch University will be welcoming its more than 5,000 new comers.

The university's Martin Viljoen says: “The online registration has been open from last week, and that seems to be running smoothly. If our newcomer students or senior students can’t register online for some reason, they can do so next week on campus.”
