Case against Diepsloot caretaker accused of child abuse withdrawn
The caretaker was arrested on Monday after a video emerged of her mishandling an eight-month-old baby boy.
The caretaker was arrested on Monday after a video emerged of her shaking an eight-month-old baby boy.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the prosecuting authority has instructed the investigating officer to obtain a statement from the baby's mother before new charges can be laid.
"She might be out of the country but we are trying to locate her."
He says the caretaker has now been released.
The investigating officer is in possession of a video recording which clearly identifies the alleged abuser while she instructs another baby to hit the eight-month-old boy.
Police say a statement from the person who filmed the video must also be obtained first before anyone can be prosecuted.
Earlier on Wednesday, nursery school principals in Diepsloot gathered at the Randburg Magistrates Court and waited for the 68-year-old woman to make her first appearance.
Questions have been raised as to why the baby’s mother didn’t open a case with police.
