Thuli Madonsela: I have lots of regrets
Madonsela believes she could have done more as the country's most celebrated public protector.
CAPE TOWN - Advocate Thuli Madonsela has reflected on her time as public protector, saying it hasn’t been without regrets.
On Monday, she told the Cape Town Press Club that more engagement with the public and politicians could have minimised the backlash during her time in office.
Madonsela has moved on from her life as the country's most celebrated public protector.
She's enrolled as a fellow of the advanced leadership initiative at Harvard University and is preparing for the launch of a centre for social justice at Stellenbosch University next year.
But she still believes she could have done more as public protector.
“I have lots of regrets, especially not engaging with the public about ethics early enough. ”
This engagement needed to extend to politicians too.
“I also believe that I should have had more quiet conversations with Cabinet.”
Madonsela says it is not for her to dictate the direction her successor should take and believes the office is heading the right way.
