Firefighters contiue to battle vegetation fires in Simon’s Town
A blaze spread rapidly in the area this week, gutting at least one home and forcing mass evacuations.
CAPE TOWN – Emergency service personnel have responded to over 700 vegetation fires since the beginning of this year.
Firefighting efforts in the Simon’s Town area have now entered a third day.
A blaze spread rapidly in the area this week gutting at least one house and forcing mass evacuations.
Several properties have been affected as a result of the inferno, including a house that was completely burnt down.
Firefighters assisted by officials from the Table Mountain National Park, Working on Fire and City Nature Conservation attended to flare-ups on Thursday.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Service’s Theo Layne says changing wind directions posed a big challenge to firefighting efforts.
“The current damage includes one garden and partially six other structures.”
This past week officials also responded to fire incidents in Paarl and the Slanghoek Valley.
The blaze in Somerset West has been contained, but the area is being monitored by authorities.
