CAPE TOWN – A Cape Town woman has appeared in court after allegedly staging her own kidnapping.

The Mitchells Plain woman apparently demanded a R10 million ransom in a bizarre bid to test her family’s love for her.

The Tafelsig woman’s husband at the weekend reported that his wife had been kidnapped after failing to return from a visit to the Town Centre shopping area in Mitchell’s Plain.

It’s believed she posed as her kidnapper, sending WhatsApp messages to her daughter demanding a ransom of R10 million.

Police then used these messages and traced her to the local Promenade Mall earlier this week.

When interviewed by police, the woman apparently explained that it was all a ploy to see whether her family loved her.

She has been charged with kidnapping, extortion and defeating the ends of justice.
