JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg police say a suspect who held three people hostage with a knife in Randburg will face criminal charges as soon as he is discharged from hospital.

The suspect allegedly took an overdose of drugs in an attempt to commit suicide on Wednesday after threatening the owner of the property, his wife and someone believed to be his ex-girlfriend, using two Swiss army knives.

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says all the hostages were released unharmed after police managed to negotiate with the perpetrator.

He says the man is now under police guard in hospital.

“He will be facing a charge of kidnapping and possession of dangerous weapons. As soon as he comes out he will be taken to the police station and we will give him a date to appear in court.”
