JOHANNESBURG - A 28-year-old Zimbabwean taxi driver is expected to appear in court in Limpopo on Tuesday after he was arrested for transporting 31 people in his vehicle.
The man was taken into custody on the N1 near Mokopane on Monday en route to Johannesburg.
His taxi’s maximum legal capacity was 14.
Authorities say that more than a dozen of the people he was carrying did not have the correct documentation to be in South Africa.
The Limpopo Traffic Department's Joshua Kwapa says Home Affairs officials detained those illegal immigrants and they will be deported.
“We will ensure that we get a guilty conviction on this matter. We are emphasising the fact that we’re leaving no stones unturned in terms of enforcing the law as far as road safety is concerned.”
