Fikile: Soweto a symbolic place for ANC's 105th anniversary
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula says the event will be held at the Orlando stadium on 8 January.
JOHANNESBURG – Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula says the African National Congress (ANC) has chosen to celebrate its 105th anniversary in Soweto because of significance the township played in the struggle for democracy.
He says preparations for celebrations under the theme unity in action are already in progress.
Mbalula says the event will be held at the Orlando stadium in Soweto on 8 January.
He says the party’s recent troubles are not a new thing and that it's always been able to rise above problems.
The ANC has seen an increase in factions with its stalwarts calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down.
The minister says the celebrations will be a platform to strengthen the governing party.
“Celebrating a milestone like 105 years of the ANC, it’s important to go to Soweto because it is the home of the liberation, and a suburb which has a history of struggle.”
