CAPE TOWN – Keeping students behind based on their math performance may do more harm than good.

An announcement that students in grades 7 to 9 would progress to the next grade with a 20% pass mark recently sparked outrage.

While some argue that students should repeat a grade until they pass maths, others say that grade repetition contributes to students dropping out.
