Senior Bitou Municipality official faces possible fraud charge

CAPE TOWN – A senior Bitou Municipality official may face a fraud charge after several councillors lodged a criminal case with the police.
The deputy mayor's wife was fired by the municipality two years ago after she allegedly gave herself a salary increase and a car allowance apparently without council's approval.
A recent council proposal is for the woman to be re-appointed as acting head of corporate services.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed dissatisfaction with the motion.
DA councillor Bill Nell claims the appointment is among a series of illegal appointments by the active united front ANC administration.
“In November we tabled a motion where we asked the question what the cost of this is and what the cost of other illegal appointments were.”
Municipal officials have not immediately been available for comment.
