JOHANNESBURG - Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba says another meeting has been scheduled with Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba to further discuss solutions to illegal immigration.

Gigaba met with Mashaba on Tuesday following the mayor's controversial comments that illegal foreigners must leave the city.

Mashaba made the statement during his 100 days in office address earlier this month.

Gigaba says the issue of illegal immigration is a national problem and needs to be addressed collectively.

“We are quite aware of the challenges the city has raised and that’s why I say confidently that these are not challenges faced by the city alone.”

He says Mashaba’s concerns on undocumented immigrants were highlighted during government’s Operation Fiela, which found there was a number of foreign nationals living in the country unlawfully.

“We are making progress in dealing with them, yet there is still so much to do.”

He says while some illegal immigrants may be involved in illegal activities, there are those who contribute positively to the economy.
