JOHANNESBURG - The University of South Africa (Unisa) has appointed former president Thabo Mbeki as its new chancellor.

Mbeki takes over from Judge Bernard Ngoepe who has stepped down after 15 years of service.

Unisa has praised Ngoepe for enhancing the institutions reputation even during difficult times.

The university says it took its process of transformation and repositioning itself as an African university into consideration during the selection of a new chancellor.
