JOHANNESBURG – Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane says Cuban engineers working in South Africa are a sign of unity which former Cuban president Fidel Castro fought for.

She says she is grateful for the skills which Cuban nationals bring to her department and departmental officials will acquire the skills through the partnership South Africa has with Cuba.

The department hosted a memorial service in Pretoria today with scores of Cuban engineers in attendance.

Mokonyane said, β€œIn honour of comrade Fidel Castro we organised a memorial for all Cubans in South Africa and also convey our appreciation on behalf of the government.”

Castro died last week and has been laid to rest his home town in San Tiego.
