CAPE TOWN - Student Union Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has expressed its “disgust” at the University of Stellenbosch’s decision to increase fees by 8% next year.

The institution has also announced earlier this week that accommodation costs will be 10% higher.

But there will be no increase for students from households earning less than R600,000 per year.

The 8% increase is in line with Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande's suggestion earlier this year.

Cosas's Michael Mayalo says they will take action to ensure none of its students will be excluded from studying at the university.

“Come January we’re going to make sure that all the learners and matriculants who are members of Cosas are admitted at the institutions and get free education.”
