JOHANNESBURG - Struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada has lauded former Cuban leader Fidel Castro for his role in supporting the liberation struggle during the apartheid era.

Speaking to 702's Stephen Grootes, he said the African National Congress (ANC)'s close ties with Cuba was significant as the party had few supporters in its plight for freedom.

Messages of condolences have continued to pour in since the news broke that 90-year-old Castro had passed away.

Castro governed Cuba for 49 years and ceded power to his younger brother Raul Castro in 2006.
