JOHANNESBURG – The Justice Ministry says it has decided to extend the period of consultation over the creation of the Hate Crimes and Hate Speech bill.

Government says the bill is aimed at making it a criminal offense to make racist comments.

It was sparked by the Penny Sparrow issue earlier this year, amid claims that government has not been able to take serious action against people who use racist language.

The ministry’s Mthunzi Mhaga says: “There has been a lot of interested that has been generated by us publishing it in the Government Gazette, and as such we then felt that it’s only fair that we extend it to 31 January.”
