JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg Emergency Service is assisting residents in Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, who have been left displaced after a tornado hit the area.

The tornado struck on Monday night, leaving one person injured.

Emergency officials say three homes have been badly damaged while dozens others have been partially affected.

Emergency Service spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says, β€œWe’re appealing to any other communities out there who might have been affected to call our emergency call centre on 011 375 5911, so that we can access their households.”

At the same time, Emergency Service officials say at least 50 houses were damaged in Ennerdale.

Officials say three of those houses were completely blown away, while the rest had wall or roof collapses.

Mulaudzi says officials are going to the area to assess whether there was more damaged.

β€œMost of those houses had their roofs damaged and also some walls collapsed. So today (Tuesday) we’ll be going back together with our Disaster Management officials to assess the other areas which we didn’t manage to cover last night.”
