JOHANNESBURG - Gareth Cliff says he's proud of the contribution he's made to Idols through the years, and has wished the remaining team well for the future.

Cliff announced his departure from the show on Facebook o n Monday.

His relationship with the show’s bosses has been rocky, after M-Net announced in January he had been fired for comments he had made on Twitter regarding Penny Sparrow.

Sparrow landed herself in trouble when she made racist comments on social media

Cliff took M-Net to court over the decision, and was later reinstated.

He wished the remaining Idols contestants and judges good luck.

“The ratings this year have been tremendous. I don’t think there’s going to be a decline. But I think for me my contribution has been significant and I’m very proud of where the show has gone and how we transformed the show.”
