DA retains ward where councillor was murdered
Hannes Baatjies was shot dead hours before he was to be sworn in as a councillor.
CAPE TOWN - The ward of a murdered Democratic Alliance (DA) councilor in the Northern Cape has been retained by the party following a by-election in the Kgatelopele Municipality.
Six people have been charged for the murder of Hannes Baatjies, who was shot dead hours before he was to be sworn in as a councilor following the Local Government Elections.
His business partner also died after being shot in the same incident.
The DA's Matthew Gerstner says: “This is the ward where our councilor was very tragically shot dead after the August 2016 election. People came out in their numbers to support the DA yesterday to vote us in to govern that municipality outright now."
