Ipid investigates after CT man dies in police custody

The man was arrested in Rondebosch at the weekend on suspicion of trying to sell a stolen cellphone.

CAPE TOWN - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the death of a man at Rondebosch police station.

The man was arrested in the area on suspicion of trying to sell a stolen cellphone at the weekend.

Ipid's Moses Dlamini says: “The police were allegedly called and then they chained the man. When they took him out at the police station he had allegedly passed away. Ipid is investigating a death in police custody.”

Dlamini adds the cause of death is unknown and will form part of the investigation.
