JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma says those involved in the fight for free education must realise that it's a negotiation process, and common ground needs to be found.

Zuma had today been answering questions in the National Council of Provinces.

He said government has been dealing with the issue and it must be given time to find a lasting solution.

"The issue of free education is being attended to. Last year when it started, I established a commission which is working on the issue and will report back at a given time."

Zuma also says people have the right to protest, but damage to property is not acceptable.

"We support that people have a right to protest, but that is also outlined in the law that it should be peaceful."

The President says all stakeholders are being consulted but those involved must be patient.
