JOHANNESBURG - Three inmates have been identified as suspects for starting a fire at the Krugersdorp Correctional Services facility last Friday.

It's understood the fire spread through two communal cells in the building, causing four offenders and six officials to suffer from smoke inhalation.

The Correctional Services Department's Manelisi Wolela says criminal charges have been opened against the inmates.

"An internal investigation has provided this information. They will be put through disciplinary processes and there will also be criminal charges in terms of the Correctional Services Act. Any damage or defacing of state property is prohibited in terms of the law."
