Wits student leader Mcebo Dlamini denied bail
The former Wits SRC leader was arrested on Sunday.
JOHANNESBURG - Wits student leader Mcebo Dlamini has been denied bail in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.
Dlamini was arrested at his student residence at the weekend on five charges including theft and assault.
Magistrate Albertus Roux says it is not in the interest of justice to grant Dlamini bail.
Roux says the affidavit Dlamini submitted in his bail application is not convincing and has contradictory statements to those presented in evidence.
He says its clear the university applied for an interdict against violent protests because there was a need to do so.
The magistrate also drew attention to pictures of Dlamini holding stones during the latest wave of student protests at Wits university.
An additional charge of damage to property has been added to Dlamini's list of charges which also include theft assault and contravening a court order.
Dlamini is expected back in court next month.
