World Food Day: WC urban residents must contribute to food security
The WC agriculture department revealed its “Smartagri” plan, a comprehensive climate change response plan.
JOHANNESBURG - As World Food Day commemorations continue, the Western Cape Agriculture Department says part of the challenge in food security in the country lies with consumers in urban areas not fully appreciating the agricultural sector.
This year's theme for the annual event is "climate is changing, food and agriculture must too".
Earlier, the department revealed its "Smartagri" plan, a comprehensive climate change response plan.
Dr Ilse Trautmann, who has been involved in the two years of research behind the plan, says there is no excuse for residents living in the City not contributing.
"We, in our won little properties in urban areas, need to see if we can contribute to food production - having your own vegetable garden at home."
