JOHANNESBURG - Protesting Wits University students say they will mobilise and make their way to the Cleveland Police Station where former SRC president Mcebo Dlamini is believed to be in custody.

Mcebo Dlamini was arrested in the early hours of this morning at the Wits junction residence in Parktown.

Eyewitnesses say Dlamini was ambushed while in his room and taken him into custody on unknown charges.

This comes a day after protesters and police clashed on the streets of Braamfontein, after the university imposed a 10pm curfew for visitors and students staying off campus.

Advocate Dali Mpofu is known to have met with Dlamini in his cell at Cleveland Police Station.

Wits SRC secretary general Fasiha Hassan says, "Our legal team and our SRC members are there. Unfortunately, I can't be there as we've been given the heads-up that they're targeting us. We have to lay low so I can't give our location, but we're trying to ensure that there are no further arrests. I'm not sure what the charges are."

Meanwhile, Wits University management has reiterated suspending academic activity is not an option.

Police say they will continue maintaining a high presence on campus today following Friday's protests which spilled over to the streets of Braamfontein.

Two cars were set alight and several businesses vandalised including the Orbit, a popular jazz club, in Braamfontein.

Nine people, including four students, were arrested following the violence.

Wits University's Shirona Patel says temporary measures have been put in place on campus to ensure the safety of students and staff.

"The temporary measures say that anyone who is not a Wits student and does not live in a residence needs to leave at 10pm, the gates close at 10pm and our students are to stay in their respective residences at night."
