CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape High Court will today sentence a man convicted of killing a gay man in a hate crime.

Christo Oncke has been found guilty of murdering David Olyne, who was gay, in Ceres in 2014.

Oncke, aged 29, has been found guilty of beating, strangling and burning Olyne to death in an apparent hate crime, because of his homosexuality.

Evidence before the court was that a group of youths were drinking in the vicinity of a dam in Ceres, when Oncke told them he was going to kill a gay man.

The court rejected Oncke's version that Olyne had made a sexual pass at him, which resulted in an altercation. Olyne was tied up, beaten and strangled and later set alight.

His charred body was found the following day.
