Gupta family lawyer wants to question state capture probe witnesses
Gert van der Merwe says if Thuli Madonsela’s report is released now, it cannot be in good faith.
JOHANNESBURG - The lawyer representing the Gupta family says they need to be given an opportunity to question witnesses who have given evidence to the Public Protector, in the case that their testimonies implicate them.
But he feels that there was a clear predetermined view and a decision had been reached long before Ajay Gupta was interviewed.
"You can't rush a report of this magnitude. I have no preference for the next or previous Public Protector. I don't care who completes it, but it needs to be done properly and you have to respect the rights of everyone you're going to implicate."
Van der Merwe has written a letter to Madonsela saying if a report is released at this stage, it cannot be in good faith.
During an interview with News24 yesterday, Madonsela said she was unaware of the letter and these remarks.
