JOHANNESBURG - Acting National Police Commission Khomotso Phahlane says investigators are in the process of compiling criminal cases against students responsible for inciting violence and intimidating fellow students.

The lieutenant general provided an update this afternoon in Pretoria on the situation unfolding on campuses across the country.

Lieutenant-General Phahlane says detectives are investigating students who have incited violence or intimidated others.

"Investigations are underway, intelligence gathering is taking place and are imminent in a number of instances."

He says ideally, the current situation should be settled through talks.

"It's not our posture to arrest people if we believe that situations like these could be resolved through engagements and negotiations."

Phahlane has urged all parties to refrain from making inflammatory comments.
