Some beneficiaries still see deductions being made from their grants without their consent.

CAPE TOWN - The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says it has seen a drop in the number of illegal deductions from beneficiary grants.

Some beneficiaries still see deductions being made from their grants without their consent.

Sassa's Busi Letompa says the agency receives fewer complaints of deductions since it started clamping down on the practice.

"Currently, I'm dealing with less than 50 [cases] of those that are directly reported to us."

She says the only deductions which can be made legally are for funeral policies.

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini says of the more than 44,000 disputes the department received nationally, about 38,000 have been resolved successfully.
