UJ SRC chairperson expected to appear again in court
Seventeen students were arrested earlier this week for contravening a court order preventing protests.
JOHANNESBURG - University of Johannesburg (UJ)'s Soweto campus SRC chairperson Innocent Khumalo is expected to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate's Court today on an assault charge.
Khumalo and 16 others were arrested on Tuesday and appeared in court yesterday on charges of contravening a court order preventing protests at any of the university's four campuses.
He was remanded in custody for a second charge of assault, while the others were released on a warning.
The group was arrested after it tried to block non-protesting students from entering the institution.
UJ student activist Sizwe Shiba says: "The SRC chairperson Innocent Khumalo has a pending case of assault which cannot be fully withdrawn until the court date on 14 October."
