#Fees2017: How to fund affordable higher education
Accountant and social activist Khaya Sithole says fees can fall “if the state restores its contribution to the funding mix to what it was about 15 years ago.”
JOHANNESBURG - Students at Wits University have formulated a model which shows how student fees could be decreased.
The model deals with the state's contribution and how it can assist students.
Another element of the model's formula is to extract a university's costs that can be shouldered by other stakeholders.
Chartered Accountant Khaya Sithole, who advised the Wits students on the funding model, says the model suggests the state restore its contribution to 50% to the cost of running a university.
He says since government decreased its contribution to the university funding mix, students have carried the burden of additional costs.
