‘1 in 9 gender based crimes is reported at tertiary institutions in SA’
Studies by the higher education department suggest the worst affected institutions are those in rural areas.
JOHANNESBURG - Studies carried out by the Department of Higher Education and Training reveal that only one in every nine gender based crimes, including rape, is reported at institutions across the country.
The department's Dr Ramneek Ahluwalia says the worst affected institutions are those in rural areas.
He says some victims drop out, while some live in trauma without seeking help.
"Our cases show that only one in nine cases are reported. So this means the magnitude of the epidemic of this problem is bigger than the number of cases reported."
