JOHANNESBURG - ANC secretary general Gwede Mantash e says the ruling party is aiming for free education, but for now is focusing on early childhood development.
Mantashe was speaking at the Black Management Forum's annual conference in Midrand today when he made reference to the student fees protests across the country.
He says many students have misinterpreted the Freedom Charter and what it says about tertiary education, emphasising that the ANC will push for free education for the poor.
"Maybe in the long term, but at the beginning the state must take the responsibility to ensure that no child is deprived the right to be developed to full capacity because of the economic status of their household."
