Godongwana: ANC must help improve mining conditions
The ANC's head of economic transformation says labour instability and strikes need to be addressed.
JOHANNESBURG - The ANC's head of economic transformation Enoch Godongwana has told delegates at a mining indaba that the organisation needs to assist with better policies to improve conditions within the mining sector.
Industry heavyweights have been meeting in Sandton to discuss how to make the sector a key driver in the economy.
Last month Godongwana spoke out against investigations into Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, describing them as an attempt to remove him from office and to weaken National Treasury.
Godongwana says electricity supply, rising costs in the mining sector and a massive decline in gold production are some of the key challenges facing the industry.
He says labour instability and strikes need to be addressed.
"What is needed is a strategic vision of the sector, a vision 2030 of the industry. Government has developed vision 2030 for the NDP. The ANC adopted that vision 2030. That is what is needed."
Among the speakers today included Deputy Mining Minister Godfrey Oliphant and former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel.
