Young author's dad surprised by daughter's talent
Michelle Nkamankeng (7) was inspired to write the book following a trip to the beach with her family.
The father of a seven-year-old girl who became the youngest African to be listed as one of the top 10 young writers in the world says he was taken by surprise by his daughter's talent.
Michelle Nkamankeng held a book launch for her first short novel titled Waiting for the waves this past weekend at the Wits University's education campus in Parktown.
Xoli Nkamankeng says that he always knew that his daughter was an avid reader but never thought that she would write a book at such a young age.
"She took us by surprise because I noticed when she was five-years-old, she loved reading."
He said that Michelle found her inspiration after they recently went on holiday at the beach.
"She asked me why everyone was standing and looking at the ocean. Then I told her that we're all waiting for the next wave to come. Then she looked at me and said: 'Daddy, you've just given an idea for my first book.'"
The book is the first in a four-book series.
