CAPE TOWN - Christopher Jantjies has been formally charged with the murder of metro police officer Ben Koopman.

CCTV footage shows Koopman was ambushed by two suspects while leaving his home in Eerste River on an afternoon in February.

They fled the scene with the 53-year-old officer's service pistol and a hand held radio.

Colleagues of the murdered metro police officer have filled the court benches.

Alongside them is his widow, Katrina Koopman.

She stared blankly at 27-year-old Jantjies as he entered the dock wearing red sweat pants and a black sports jacket.

The State says the accused has a criminal history and has appeared in the same court, but under a different name.

For this reason, the magistrate has postponed proceedings until 19 October to give the State time to build a proper bail profile.
