Cape woman released from jail after alleged rape by cop

CAPE TOWN - A Mitchells Plain woman who was raped, allegedly by a police officer while in custody, has since been released from jail.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the incident that allegedly took place on Sunday at a Mitchells Plain Police Station.

The woman says the officer allowed her to use his cellphone to call her husband and then raped her.

Ipid's Robbie Raburabu says the officer is still working and has not yet been arrested.

Raburabu says the rape survivor has received hospital treatment.

"It happened on 25 September, which was on Sunday. The victim has since received helped and she was released."
