YouTube blogger aims to distribute menstrual cups to girls in need
Theodora Lee has collected over 2,000 menstrual cups so far.
JOHANNESBURG - YouTube sensation Theodora Lee has called on South Africans to support a drive to distribute over 2,000 menstrual cups to school girls who cannot afford sanitary pads.
The campaign with Swedish brand INTIMINA has already collected thousands of rands overnight, but more is needed in order to distribute the hygiene product.
According to Africa Check, over three million girls are missing school every month because they cannot afford sanitary towels.
Lee, who is an advice and lifestyle blogger with over 200,000 subscribers, says while she has addressed teenage problems like getting your periods before, she had never considered the far-reaching impact.
"I was going to do a video to just raise awareness but then that is not going to help anything further. I have always spoken to these teenagers in a way that they can all afford the luxury of sanitary towels but I have never actually sat down and addressed the fact that they would never be able to go out and buy the hygiene product. I've always assumed everyone can afford it."
She says an additional 2,000 cups might be donated.
"We have needed some money in order to distribute the cup. We have almost reached our target and there is a possibility that INITIMINA will provide another 2,000 cups."
