Mbete praises Madikizela-Mandela at 80th birthday celebration
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela celebrated her 80th birthday at Emperor's Palace on Monday.
JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) chairperson Baleka Mbete has described Winnie-Madikizela Mandela as a mother, saying that one of her strongest qualities was that of unifying the nation.
Yesterday Madikizela-Mandela celebrated her 80th birthday at Emperor's Palace hosted by the ANC Women's League.
The "mother of the nation" as she is affectionately known has held a series of celebrations during the month.
Hours after the program was set to begin Madikizela-Mandela was welcomed with ululating and song.
The ANC's Mbete says after seeing the various celebrations during the month it is clear that Mama Winnie is a unifier.
"You had comrade Cyril on the one side, you had Julius Malema on the other side, and it spoke of who you are."
The Young Women's Desk presented Madikizela-Mandela with an ANC "doek" that will now have her face on it.
