Blade Nzimande: We’ll support universities’ efforts to secure institutions
Nzimande says university management will be left with little choice when faced with human casualties.
PRETORIA - Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says the department will support universities in every effort to secure institutions and students against violent demonstrations.
The minister was speaking after a meeting with the Interim Board of Convocations and Alumni in Pretoria today.
A group of students later attempted to stage a sit in, at the department's reception area, but were forcibly removed by the police.
Nzimande says university management will be left with little choice when faced with human casualties, referring to worker Celumusa Ntuli, who died at Wits University, and destruction of property.
"We will support universities who choose to shut down and vacate students from residences, in order to save the institutions from a violent minority."
The Interim Board of Convocations and Alumni says it will also attempt to negotiate with the various parties.
The board has condemned the violent and disruptive protests.
