Protesting UCT medical students vow to continue occupying dean's suite
They have staged a sit-in since yesterday, following a meeting with the dean and management.
CAPE TOWN - Protesting University of Cape Town (UCT) Health Science students have vowed to continue occupying the dean's suite today.
They have staged a sit-in since yesterday, following a meeting with the dean and management.
Protesting students say they are not happy with the manner in which staff members dealt with the grievances they have raised.
The students say their grievances include fee increase and student victimasation.
They have also emphasized they will not meet with management unless private security is removed from campus.
The Dean of UCT Health Faculty Bongani Mayosi has assured them this has been done.
They have called on the university to take a collective stand to put pressure on government to scrap tuition fees altogether.
Eleven students were barred from campus earlier this week, pending disciplinary action for allegedly damaging university property.
UCT student Mlingani Matiwane said the Ikeys shutdown will also continue.
"There is a reason why we have shut down. When the reason comes out and management takes us seriously, the university will not be shut down."
Classes, lectures and tutorials at UCT were halted this week as protests and disruptions escalated.
The protesters say discussions with management have been fruitless.
