JOHANNESBURG - Uber says it's in the process of testing a number of security features, including an SOS button, to ensure the safety of passengers.

In the past few months, the cab hailing service has faced scrutiny after recent reports of bogus Uber drivers.

In August, a Johannesburg couple was kidnapped and attacked allegedly by a man posing as an Uber driver.

Uber has also appointed a new head of physical security to improve security measures for users.

Uber's Alon Lits says the company has started testing a number of safety features.

"We're introducing vehicle colour into the application, so in addition to seeing the vehicle make, model and registration details, you'll be able to see the vehicle colour."
