Cosatu takes cautious approach on ANC succession battle
Cosatu says it won’t be making any pronouncements on an ANC presidential candidate for now.
JOHANNESBURG - Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) says it won't be making any pronouncements on an African National Congress (ANC) presidential candidate for now, to allow its affiliates time to have their own consultations.
The federation held its special central executive committee meeting yesterday to discuss various political and organisational matters.
Cosatu has taken a cautious approach on the matter, but insists this is not a sign of weakness.

Cosatu's Bheki Ntshalintshali says the federation's affiliates and their members must first deliberate on the preferred candidates before any pronouncement can be made.
"Workers will not only be looking at the position of the president but at the leadership collective that will act as a centre and also be guided by the resolution of the ANC."
While there is a belief that Cosatu will be backing Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as the ANC's next leader, it says his name isn't the only one that has been brought up.
The federation says whatever discussions it has should not be reckless and should instead unite the alliance, adding for this reason it's chosen to tread carefully before making any announcement on whom it will support.
