DA calls on Parliament to look into Makwakwa probe
The Sars commissioner allegedly received information on Makwakwa in May but only recently took action.
CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on Parliament's Finance Portfolio Committee to look into the handling of an investigation into suspended South African Revenue Services (Sars) official Jonas Makwakwa.
Makwakwa's suspension follows allegations by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) of irregular deposits into his personal bank accounts, totalling around R1.2 million.
Sars commissioner Tom Moyane allegedly received this information in May but only recently took action.
But Moyane has accused the FIC of being uncooperative.
DA Member of Parliament David Maynier says there are a host of burning questions.
"What we need to know most importantly is why the serious allegations against Jonas Makwakwa, which may constitute a crime, in terms of Prevention of Organised Crime Act, do not appear to have been referred to the Saps by the FIC or Sars."
