CAPE TOWN - Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela says the transformation of the old Conradie Hospital site in Pinelands into a mega residential development will be one of the biggest projects undertaken in the city.

The 22-hectare site is set to be developed for housing, at least two schools, shops and office space over the next 10 years.

Construction on-site is set to commence in 2018 with resident taking occupancy from 2020.

Madikizela says it's a groundbreaking development.

"Pinelands is a few kilometers away from town and has many amenities, so we call it a gam changer."

Madikizela says the project will have housing for a wide range of income earners.

"We'll have about 3,600 housing opportunities there that will bring together people who earn between R3,500 to R21,000."
