JOHANNESBURG - Congress of the People (Cope) has launched a scathing attack against National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams, saying he is nothing but President Jacob Zuma's puppet.

The party has called for the removal of Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi, adding it's a disgrace to place them on special leave.

Cope's Dennis Bloem has highly criticised Abrahams, and says the director looks prepared to break the law for the president.

"The national director is nothing but a puppet to Mr Zuma."

Bloem says Abrahams won't admit that Jiba and Mrwebi are unfit because he would also lose his job.

"These type of things are bringing the country down. You can never have people without proper qualification sitting in such

Yesterday, the two advocates were struck off the roll for acting in bad faith by protecting former crime intelligence head Richard Mdluli from prosecution on charges of fraud and corruption.

Meanwhile, Former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Mxolisi Nxasana says while he feels vindicated by the decision to strike Jiba off the roll of advocates, he finds it disappointing that the Presidency and Justice Department failed to act when he first raised his concerns.

Nxasana has described government's apparent reluctance to intervene as sad.

But Justice Minister Michael Masutha says there were processes underway.

"There were other processes that were underway. The then CE of the organisation had requested a retired judge of the Constitutional Court to inquire into this matter."

Masutha says he will urgently consult with President Jacob Zuma on the status of Jiba following a scathing High Court judgment against her.
