CAPE TOWN - A Stellenbosch University student says she simply will not be able to afford any tuition fee increase for the next academic year.

Simone Cupido is one of several protesting Maties students who are calling for tuition fees to be scrapped.

A group of students was physically removed by campus security, after staging a sit-in at a campus library this week.

Cupido says she believes Maties will survive without a fee increase. "An institution like UWC might not survive with a zero percent fee increment, but I am assured that Stellenbosch University will survive and thrive with a zero percent fee increment. We have a lot of income coming into our university."

But vice chancellor Wim de Villiers says that's not the case.

"All of us would like to support free education for all but it's not currently feasible, given our economy and the chronic underfunding of the sector."
