Sars appoints Firdous Sallie as acting chief officer for business, individual tax
The announcement of Sallie's appointment was the first official confirmation of Makwakwa's suspension.
JOHANNESBURG - The South African Revenue Services (Sars) has appointed Firdous Sallie as the acting chief officer for business and individual tax replacing the revenue service's second in-command Jonas Makwakwa with immediate effect.
The announcement of Sallie's appointment was the first official confirmation of Makwakwa's suspension by Sars.
It emerged yesterday that commissioner Tom Moyane had informed staff of the move in an internal memo following allegations of mystery payments that were allegedly made into Makwakwa's personal bank account.
The revenue service says it has noted media reports on suspicious financial flows in Makwakwa and another colleague Kelly-Ann Elksie's accounts.
Spokesperson Sandile Memela said, "This follows the submission of the report by the financial intelligence centre which alleged the deposit of monies into bank accounts of the Jonas Makwakwa."
